deck staining

As part of a house cleaning package we are staining a deck.  We are replacing 60' of 5/4 x 6 treated.  Deck is stained with sherwin williams deckscapes solid water bourne.  In great condition, only needs to be cleaned not stripped.  What recommendation for cleaning deck and how to prepare the new deck boards we are installing for the stain?

Tim, when I have a good water based stain, I typically use a 5% SH and soap, quick scrub with a brush and a rinse with booster. Admittedly however I am no wood expert.

And Glad to see you here!  For those of you who don't know Tim, I met him through SWS...he's a great guy!!!!!!

Tim was with us when we had dinner at Carmins at the Trop in March.
Tim you need to let the CCA dry for a couple of weeks or the stain won't hold. CCA is wet when you buy it and needs to weather some.

most companies will say on new construction to let the wood weather for a year before staining.. However if you use oxalic it speeds up the process and helps get rid of any mill glaze..

Art, the only dumb question is the one not asked. So what's CCM short for?

We do a few decks down here and my offsider who is a 30 year painter reckons he's got it down. From experience we've got some good results and we charghe it out at about $20.00 sq meter. That's around $2.00 Sq Foot from memory

Deck reviver or Oxalic acid. 10 to 1 and work it in with a broom. The trick with any timber is let the tannin's release from the timber with an active such as Oxalic. Then rinse ,Rinse ,Rinse and rinse again. I usually pressure wash boards with a 40 degree fan. Pull back and get 3 boards at a time. Walk the fan the length of the board so as to get an even effect on all boards.
Depending on what you are staining or sealing with you will need to let the timber dry. I use a 4 stroke weed blower to speed this up in cooler months.

I am told the Water Based Acrylic by Cabbots called AQUATEC is very good and very easy to maintain and reapply later. Oils are another matter and the timber definitely needs to be dry.

We clean a lot of decks in many different ways. It all depends on whet the customer wants and what is already there. When it's painted or stained and it is in good shape we do about a 5 - 10% mix, depending on what is growing. We rinse with the booster pump and will also use a low pressure tip using the pressure washer.

I think you mean CCA which is Copper Chromium Arsenic - the stuff that the lumber was pressure treated with. Most pressure treated uses something different. I forget the designation.
