This is something I got from a remodeling trade news letter in the 80's and it works very well.
We all know the three biggest complaints we hear... he didn't return my call... he showed up late for the appointment... he didn't show up at all.
Back in the days of pagers and phone booths is when I used to use this at least twice a week. Now the hard part is purposely being late when one is annal about being on time. Call the customer while sitting in a parking lot just a few blocks away and tell them you are running late. I usually am only 10 minutes late. Once in the door they are almost always grateful that you called for just ten minutes. I cannot put a number on the jobs I got using this tactic but I do know it's on the high end of the percentage scale.
So many people just show up and don't think to call. People really like that simple courtesy.
