Is there a way to see the newest post first instead of having to scroll to the end of the thread.

There is nothing wrong with an "all the above" approach to SEO...blogging on other sites but never do it at the expense of your own. If you are being outranked for a keyword by a forum post or blogpost (same thing basically) then you haven't done enough work on your own site.
