How are you guys winterizing your pumps. Some guys use wind Shield washer fluid others RV antifreeze or do you just blow out the pump and line with air. I was in West Marine and they have boat anti freeze for pumps that looks good.

We blow out all lines with air, and run washer fluid through the pump, cut at 50/50. Cutting at 50/50 is good down to 10-15 degrees.

Art I use the RV anti freeze, After the pump is cleaned, I run it through and recapture it so I can use it the next day

I think I'm going to try that West Marine pump antifreeze this year. It has a lubricator in it for the pump.

We use 50/50 antifreeze. We try to reuse a couple of times.

I found that 50/50 is cheaper then straight antifreeze.

I guess West Marine is bigger than I realized. I replaced the VP's roof a couple weeks ago.

Good tip. How'd you figure that out?

Thanks Ed. I should point out that my 50/50 solution is made using -20 washer fluid. This is the one most commonly sold in my area.
This list shows the approximate amount of methanol in the different types of washer fluid. The -20 cut to 50/50 will have 17-18% methanol which will get you safely in the 10-15 degree range. I believe this mix will withstand freezing down to 0 degrees, but it could start to slush.
+20 F Washer Fluid - Contains approximately 7% methanol. 0 F Washer Fluid - Contains approximately 23% methanol. -10 F Washer Fluid - Contains approximately 28% methanol. -20 F Washer Fluid - Contains approximately 35% methanol. -25 F Washer Fluid - Contains approximately 38% methanol. -50 F Washer Fluid - Contains approximately 62% methanol.

Hello all,
If you are winterizing your pumps be careful what you use because it can cause premature ware to your packing's and or dry out your o rings on your brass and valve seats. I use to run rv antifreeze and blow out the excess if it pools it is like not flushing the chemicals out after washing.
