The seasons are changing and the joy of Spring is in the air. Soon we will be opening window and doors and allowing that fresh warm air back into our homes. Next will come the age old tradition of spring cleaning where we dust, we mop and maybe even pull down the drapes or wipe down the ceiling fans…..oh the joys of spring.
Most spring cleaning involves the interior of the home but let us not forget about the exterior. As we open the doors and windows we should consider what we are inviting into our homes. So, at this very moment, you’re probably thinking about bugs and window screens and not about mildew and fungi. Yet the winter months bring on the rains and clouds and keep the sun at bay. No sunshine for the past few months provides the perfect habitat for these allergens.
Much like flour or sawdust - algae, mildew and other allergens will stay put when they are wet….but once they dry out even a slight breeze will allow them to become airborne and enter the newly opened windows and doors.
Sure, we can stay locked in our homes but what fun is there in that? So this year, as you consider spring cleaning, take the time to look around the outside for the black growth in the corners of your home or by the air conditioning systems. Look for those lovely green and yellowish red colors on your front pillars or under the window sills. Let’s start the spring off by cleaning inside and outside so we can breathe in that fresh spring air…..ahhh.
