Had about a hour sales call with Yelp yesterday, trying to get me to advertise on their site. Last summer, when I relaunched my site, I advertised for Yelp and burnt through $200 in a quickness.
Sales rep is telling me that people are searching for home improvement site/service on Yelp....even more so than on google. I was told that last month there were 550 searches in my market that would have made my ad pop up. Under further scrutiny, those 550 searches were basically anything that involve a house/maintenance/service, etc. I still have a problem believing there were even that many searches in my area involving home improvement.
I was reviewing my old metrics from Yelp. You can see on the graphs in yellow during the months when I advertised. Ironically, the amount of leads the yelp says I had (which are measured by clicks to my site) actually went DOWN during those months.
Rep never would actually tell me how many people searched for "pressure washing" on yelp in my local market.
So they rolled out a "new program". I was floored by the costs. They thought the "standard" package would be best for me, and that is a 12 month commitment, after which time you can go month to month.

I have not had any luck with them. I had an ad up for a month and got minimal clicks. Wast of money for me.

For $850 I can put out 500 bandit signs and get a 1000 really good leads

For that Art you can take out 400 building manager's, land 2 jobs and double if not quadruple your R.O.I.
YELP was one of those companies charged with paying people for phony "reviews".

There must be some really gullible people when it comes to this stuff. Amazon wants 20%, Angie's List up to 30% of a really bad deal. Then there is the all wonderful Home Advisor! We try something, it doesn't work and have to explain to someone only looking out for their pocket that we do not want it. I am completely done with this stuff. I don't ever see anyone coming up with something that is fair for all parties. I'd rather put my money into SEO!

I wasted a bunch of money with Yelp. I think it's good to have a profile, but I'll never advertise there again. I wasted about $1000.

I paid them almost $300 to start the program (12 months) and the first month spent about $150 for what they called THREE leads and about that much the second month. I don't know what happened to the "leads" but they sure didn't call me so I could schedule work. They said "we gave you leads" but the leads included no names, numbers, email addresses. Nothing! When I decided to stop throwing money away they reminded me there was a $700 early cancellation fee. I paid just to cut ties.

Yelp must be desperate. Their sales rep called me just about every day for the last two weeks. I didn't answer the phone for any of her calls. She would immediately call me after the first time I wouldn't answer and leave a vm. She would explain that 350 or so people were looking for my services but only one lead could find me.

They aren't calling me! I guess they figured they've bled me dry already. Stay away from those shysters.

I'm so glad we were informed early on not to pay into any of the promo sites.
I ordered a pile of simple yard signs myself.

To save some money, don't purchase the sign stakes. Instead, purchase from Mendards masonry ladders. They come in 10' sections. You simply cut in them into sections and you then have your sign stakes.

Thanks Dave, that saves a bunch of money. You can get them free... Art just goes out after elections and helps clean up the political signs.

Back to the subject... by law they are supposed to adhere to our wishes and not contact us again. It took a strong email and an angry phone call to get Home Advisor off my back. I don't remember what I did to get Yelp to leave me alone. The easiest one was Angie's List.

Yeah, you can even spray paint the signs blank then if you have a simple template with your lettering respray your own.
You can even claim to be an ECO FRIENDLY company since your recycling political trash😁

Home Advisor, on the other hand, was worth it for us in our first year. Cost us about 20% of our total contracts we got through them. Jobs we wouldn't have had otherwise. Two big tile roof cleaning jobs came through Home Advisor. I did find out that one of my roof cleaning competitors on Home Advisor drives in from another state.

the sad reality is, with any of the lead generators, Angies, Yelp, HA( iHATE them), etc....essentially you are paying them to compete with your own search engine rankings.

Yep. sometimes HA's fake roof cleaning company shows up on Google right above mine. I also hate that you can find my info on HA's site All the reviews are mine. The address is right. The Phone number...Not mine. And if somebody calls that number, I get a bill.

After my last experience with Yelp, I thought there has to be a lot more than us who HATE Yelp! I found a Yelp FB group that has a lot more to say. Maybe one day there could be enough of us to fight such an unfair company the can't get above a B+ with BBB.
Haven't they been in to sh!tload of lawsuits over purposely posting fake BAD reviews as part of extortion tactics , yet honest ordinary citizens who post bad reviews against their in-the-pocket advertisers are being hit with Liable lawsuit's.
Wtf?

Yeah Yelp has been a big pain in the butt. They don’t stop calling me with their ridiculous pitches. I much prefer Google. At least they leave me alone.
