Is this the nozzle you are talking about? I have had some in the past but had no clue what the vane was for.

"1/4” Meg Hard Hitter Nozzles to bring exceptional power to control gun surface cleaning and cutting applications. The internal guide vane focuses flow for maximum performance. They are made from hardened stainless steel and feature male NPT threads and wrench flats for easy installation."
We used them when I worked for a chemical processing plant. They were the type of nozzle we used on the end of the clean out guns for inside the tanks. The internal vane can be pulled out if it does not work the way you want.

first time seeing them, wondered what advantage they had and applications.

They are supposed to help "straighten" out the stream....I usually pull them out.
