I have been interviewing for a week for a trainable lead tech. Out of the 18 who were "interested" only about 6 replied. Out of those I got two no shows, two were from Africa and in no way could be a lead tech for at least a year. One this morning would work well but... DUI two years ago and may not be able to be on insurance. The guy this afternoon didn't read a damn thing! The ad says no neck or hand tattoos. The first thing I noticed were the two neck tattoos. I almost told him to leave but thought I'd waste his time. He filled out the application, I asked him if he had any experience with supervising people, the answer... No. I mentioned driving and he said he doesn't have a license. I then told him we can't use him and he seemed surprised. I had to explain that we go to people's homes, they don't come to us. There isn't much out there for us to choose from!
I swear, the next one that shows up and doesn't read, I'll send him on.

I remember older people joking and even in some tv shows and movies they would say how the younger generation is going down the crapper, I don't think many generations were as bad as what is out there now.
I also would put things in the ad to see how many would read or understand and not many of them could read or understand the basic, simple things. It is a shame that people cannot follow simple instructions, do things in a certain order or understand that the way things need to be done is that way for a reason, not how you feel like doing them.
In the years when I was able to work a lot, I would put ads to hire people and I would tell them to be honest because I don't want to hire people from the other pressure washing companies, too many bad habits to deal with, too many shortcuts, no attention to quality, etc.....I would rather hire someone with no experience who wants to work, will show up, who does not mind working for a living, etc..... too many these days think they are entitled to everything and don't have to work for it.

It seems the talent (or lack thereof) pool is so shallow nowadays. No enthusiasm whatsoever. Most are a disappointment from the get go and that's their parents opinion.

It is a tough crowd out there and that only means that unfortunately we have to adapt our policies to fit the narrative sometimes. Not all Policies but some.

Tattoos don't bother me at all until the dumb ass puts it on their neck, face, hands. These are the ones complaining they cannot get a good job. People in our demographics, etc. are uncomfortable with that stuff. Tattoos on their arms, legs, hell... the head of their member is no big deal.
I hired a guy sight unseen years ago. He sounded great on the phone. When he got here I saw the gigantic neck tattoo and when I shook his hand there was an SS tattoo between the thumb and finger. How drunk did he have to get one night to do something that stupid?

It was just a phase they were going through and he's only 31 years old according to his parents. I'll speak to him when he comes up from the basement where he lives at my house.

I agree totally with the tat issue.
When I was young tats just became legal but at least i had the wisdom to think of my future and how what might be "cool" then could have consequences so I never got one.
Plus I didnt want any identifiable markations because I did a lot of crazy sh!t.
I still laugh out of embarrassment for others with "trampstams" on their lower backs.
Especially when its heterosexual guys! Lol!
Got a "friend" who has one. its so sadly funny esp when his wife who Ive been friends wih forever calls him out for it!
I tell all the young guys i hire not to be stupid, think of your futures!

Those are some good points. Back in Jr. High School guys would do their own tattoos with regular pen ink and they would always look like crap and later on in life would pay for better tattoos.
It was funny about the trampstamp tatttoos, only a few guys would have them, turned out they all were guy but hiding it but no matter how hard they tried to hid it, it always came out, they were not fooling anyone. lol
In the past years I would try to hire people from craigslist ads but most would not read the ad, could not follow instructions, did not have a driver license or vehicle or the other things that I required them to do or have to weed out the people who were not serious, those that would need to be driving or other things.
It would be nice if people would start thinking about the future, future employment and how people will view them or react with them before they make some of their life choices but so many don't think about further than this weekend or don't worry about it at all.

That's OK Chris... it's everyone else's fault and the nanny state will take care of them because they made all the wrong choices!

I remember the tramp stamps back in the early and mid 90's down here, it is a shame that so many got them, thinking they would help make them look cool, more attractive or whatever. Seems like tattoo removal business might be doing good.
The multiple punctures to the head, face, ears, and the large hoops in the ears, I don't know what they did that for, what they wanted it to mean or stand for but it seemed to help isolate them from public because people down here always laughed at them when they were seen. I guess if you are anti-social, that is a good way to help keep you from dealing with the public.

I just hired a 24 year old father of 1, He really stood out. He said his family are in the medical field so he is the outcast, I checked out all my prospects on line. facebook posts will tell a lot about personal habits. I found just let them talk and people will open up. They will tell what you want to know.
I finally got tired of having the MISFITS.

Yesterday a 39 y/o guy started with the lead tech who is starting his third year. He's a transplant from Mississippi. He was at the shop 1/2 hour early with about 1/2 hr drive to work. A farming back ground and not afraid of work. Two more to go...

Same problems this side of the world. Not the tattoos so much just impossible to get good guys. Spent last summer looking for someone, tried several and gave up in October. We're having another boom cycle here and all the good people are working, will start looking again in April. If you get the right person it's worth the wait.
