Anytime I pull into a driveway, I look for signs of a dog, "Beware Of Dog" sign, box,.bowls, etc.. then I whistle for a dog and see if I get a response,..I also have dog treats with me,...they will usually quiet a barking dog and make friends,..unless he's just plain mean. But, I have never run into a men dog since I started this business in 1996. Lots of friendly dogs,...I had a lab once the home owner couldn't find,..she asked if I'd seen "Rocky"? I said no: Come to find he crawled up into my van and made his way to the front passenger seat and went to sleep,...I told her, "Hey, I found Rocky"

Pit bulls? What the hell are you washing, junkyards and meth labs?

Seriously though, all my guys carry pocketknives, and the night crew has something higher caliber in the truck. I have a CWP, so 90% of the time I'm packing.

Never had an issue with dogs up here in the sticks. As Jeff pointed out there are always tell tale signs if a dog is present. We do have utility knifes in the tool box but I don't see a need to have them on my person.

Our biggest concern is the stupid deer that run out in front of cars/trucks on a daily basis. The local body shops are filled with damaged vehicles due to the deer. In 17 years living up here I've hit two. One with my old Chevy Blazer. The only damage was a cracked grill. The other deer didn't have a snowballs chance in hell against a 2500 chevy, with the snow plow, doing 50mph.

Pat are we talking the american pit bull which is a cross bread or the original bitbull which is a stafshire terrier... I have experience here... and can help you.. no joke. For the last 30 years I have always had a dog trained in family protection. I have 2 dogs now that are trained.. But there is a Hugh difference in bit bull and stafshire terrier. There are ways to deal with either breed of these dogs

Zack american Labs are easy to deal with, but i have 2 english breed Labs, one chocolate and one is white.. they are aprox 90lbs with the head size of a rottwieller. These Labs are no the hunting Labs these dogs are large and a ball of muscle. Buy instinct all dogs are protective doesnt matter if dogs are in there yard of in a car.

I guess Im talking about the American pit bull. Last year two of them nearly killed a women while walking, I know her face was torn apart, scalp and so on. I'm not worried about dogs of the homeowners, I'm talking thesee stray pit bulls, they are not just in junk yards up this way. People get them and they get out and they are real nasty. They may be more common in sheeety areas but where this women was malled was a nice area. I think us guys up North...NY and NJ probably might have more of a risk. If your carry your guns around S/H be careful...just the fumes can rust things up and if you need it may not work. I once left S/H in a closed container in my shed over the winter....every wrench got a nice coat of rust.

Pat if you encounter a pit bull on the street do these steps

1 never look them in the eye

2 notice there ears and tail

3 never turn and run

4 if they come you give them your arm, don't kick.

5 once the bit bull bites your arm stick your other hand in the mouth and grab the upper jaw near the back of the throat. The pit bulls jaw has a natural gag reflex and will open up.. always give the dog your arm..

Dogs close there eyes when they bite and shake. No sense wasting time and energy on eye gougging.. the eyes are not biting you. Pit bulls are a fitting dog so punching or kicking them won't work. Trying to get there eyes also won't work. Bit bull hate to have there upper jaw and throat grabbed. It isn't a natural feeling for them. Big dogs get tired easily so the only chance you stand is endurance.. this is why Police dogs are Shepard's or Checlizavian Mallinwas.. Mali was are fast ,lean,never tire and have tremendous jaw pressure. Dog trainers use Belgium lined arm gloves because of dogs jaw pressure.
