Thompson pumps (not Ed) and longevity?

Anyone using Thompson pumps for bulk transfer, and if so, can you speak to longevity?  The prices are crazy, but 30+GPM is hard to pass up.  Insight anyone?  Otherwise this may turn in to a $1600 experiment......

nope.. we use a fat-boy mounted to the wall above our 55's with 8 feet of suction and like 12 feet of poly outlet hose.. The most we carry at any time is about 60 anyways so it only take 5-7 min.. I have had the same pump for 3 years, always flush it.. I don't know about $1600 lol

You mean these things in the picture Lee?  We eat them for lunch  I've added a few more to the graveyard since that pic was taken.

With multiple trucks, and multiple tanks, time is money hence considering taking the plunge.  I have no problem doing so if it'll stand the test of time.  They're designed for corrosives, but only have a 1 year guarantee "against defects".  Hence trying to find out if anyone has had them for any length of time.  At least they're modular, ie the motors run about $400 and the pump that I'll need (for a large vat) runs about $1200!

Surely someone has already tried this set up out?

wow thats alot of pump... I can understand how the insides would wear out especially if they are not rinsed, but how does the outside get that corroded?? The only problem I have ever had was the in-line fuse blowing.. And I have had maybe 3,000 gallons of 12.5 through one pump

They came off of the trucks Lee, and we abuse the heck out of them. Very seldom do the ever get rinsed.  Most of those in the 'pile' are salvageable though.  I just need to set aside some time to go through them.  (When a pump on one of the rigs acts up, if it can't be fixed in about 5 minutes, it gets replaced - all in the essence of time/production.) We're about to take delivery of 1200 gallons of SH at a time, so I'm looking for a fast way to transfer now hence the research on Thompson.  30+ gpm vs 7.

Ted,
We use a pool pump that was suggested and used by other companies to transfer from the bulk totes we get from Univar to the truck tank. It takes about 4 minutes to transfer the full 50 gallons of SH.

This year we are going to go with Univar's mini bulk system, so they will keep our tank filled at the shop, and then we will use the pool pump to the truck.

Never heard of it Ted. I think I'd invest in the pool pump before spending the $1600 on the Thompson. This will be our third season using the same 5850 to transfer from the mini bulk tank.

Thanks for the feedback gents.

And a huge, public thanks to Chris/Chesapeake for the new SH supplier intro that led to this. The vats should arrive in just a few days.

Ted it might be worth it to rinse the pumps out everyday. It only takes 5-10 minutes.

We should do it daily Mike, but seldom do (I even have them plumbed for rinsing with no power required).  We work until dark almost every day (5-10 roofs / day) and after a loooong day, I just don't bother with them.  I sell more jobs instead    Most of the pumps in that picture can be fixed.  I just need to set aside the time for it.
