I am washing the roof of this home because his insurance company is forcing him to. They also want the algae removed from his cedar shake.....I figure I would use a weaker roof mix and I told the guy it would probably look like the bottom of photo #1. I said I don't seal it and he was fine with that...he wants it to seal naturally> Do you think a weak roof mix is all I need?

I would say around a 2% solution and maybe a little pressure to get the thick moss off.

I agree with Mike D.. We did a similar job back in May, which was just as bad if not worse. Plenty of rinsing was the trick for heavy moss removal and we neutralized it as well.

Thanks Mike and Hank. You think a lil light pressure from a power washer? Do you agree it will come out looking like the bottom shake in photo one or brighter?

Weve done a few cedar roofs. Been a while. Wed. I did a wood deck with roof mix. Watched it change colors! There was a white film on it, i pressure washed off. Much faster than 4 stepping the wood.

Also the wood was so covered in mildew, ya kinda couldnt see the deck. It blended in real well with the woods around it.

Ok a big thanks to Hank for some helpful hints on my first cedar cleaning. Another big Thanks to Art who provided me with the acid and watered down the property for me as well, and I thought I could do it alone. Now lets recap, I did this cedar for 3 Bills, he just needed the green algae gone for the Ins. Co. At the end I told him this would satisfy the Ins. Company but there was more of a process to prepare the cedar for sealing which he did not want. I rinsed down with a water hose only, I think I should have tried the PW I think it would have got rid of the stuff still on shingle in last photo? Or was my mix to weak? Any comments are welcome...Thanks....

I think if we would have made the Oxalic Acid stronger it would have turned out better. We only ha 10 lbs and added it to 30 gallons of H2o. Pat wanted to rinse, I didn't think it was needed. But it came out better then it was.

We use 12 to 18 ounces of ox per gallon.

Ok so a big difference on the cedar shake from yesterday. Is this look normal or is it because I didn't use a PW for rinse and cleaning?

Rinsing just didn't stop the bleaching effect. That's what the ox does.

Mike,

Oxylic Acid is used to neutralize mix on wood surfaces. It's also known as wood brightener. Many hardware stores carry it, albeit, in small quantities or you can order it through your suppliers. It's in powdered form. We use it on wood decks, cedar roof and siding shakes.

Hank

Ox acid after bleach? I've used it before after sodium percarb and sodium hydrox. Big difference to the wood.

After bleach??

Should the cedar still be wet when you put the OX on or can you wait a day. I've been doing some testing and the cedar looks better when I wait a day to put the OX on.

oxalic acid has a nice sweet taste to it. Not like sh or hydroxide. If I accidentally eat chemicals I prefer oxalic.
