Eric, create the perfect voicemail script, go to Fiverr and have a pro record it. People will be more likely to leave a message if it sounds professional. Make it short and sweet.

I use droid phone and tablet. I have them on the cloud system so I can do business anywhere. But Eds idea sounds way better than mine.

First you have to pick up the phone when it rings. other wise youll lose business. People will just call the next company on the list.

I know there is an answering service that will answer the call, they ask the client any questions you set them up with and then they text you with the info. This way you can prescreen clients without having to pick up the phone. and the client gets to talk to a live person. You can then call those that seem promising back all within a few minutes. I cant remember the name of the service but i can look it up if someone wants.

nothing worse then being in the middle of a task and you pick up the phone the client wants to talk for an hour about a job you dont even want.

We haven't had a landline in years. A smartphone (we prefer Android over iPhone) is one of the best business tools you can invest in. If answering your phone quickly is an issue I'd suggest another line on your plan so an office person could do so or getting an service to answer your phone. Folks usually call and then go down the line calling others till the get an answer. It can be a matter of who responds first.

Ed what are you using for a business phone? I love the idea of using just my cel and letting a professional voicemail answer when I can't. Currently new messages are sent to my email with fonality and I would hate to lose that. At the same time, Fonality is rubbish. My wife is from England and has a good voice but the quality is horrible. I have toyed with google voice bit I'm not sure that is a quality long term option.

I've always liked my land line because I'm listed first in every phone book that lands in my driveway. I also get free Internet listings from it. I never cared to run my business from a cell phone. I guess its a old school thing. Ray my rotary phone just broke I had to get one of them cordless phone things
