While I have been given so much help thru the boards, I still had to spend my dime educating myself which included flying to Texas to be tutored by Doug Rucker.

I stopped giving do it yourselfers advice ever since I had an accident with SH in my eyes and did not know if they were going to heal or not for 5 days.

This business model is simple, but there is a lot of time investment that a person has to be willing to invest before a little information will not do more harm than good.

I am amazed how many guys watch You Tube and see how easy it is to clean roofs "wrong" and then grab a pressure washer without any training and then expect it to be the golden ticket!

We get the calls here also. I was going to start charging for consultations and still might depending on their locations. Most of the time they call and say " Since I'm not in your area, can you help me?" After being on these boards the last five years, you get to know other guys in "those areas" and it may effect them.

If I get a call and the guy is willing to pay for the consultation, I'll check around first to see who is already set up in the area in question. If I know the guy already in that area, I'll check with them first to see what there input is regarding a new start up in their area before helping anyone. I'm not looking to step on anyone's toes here and I would hope others would do the same for me.

Get 10-12 a day. If i know them,or they are referred by someone I know, I help them. If not they can join my web based school, and once they have taken that we can talk by phone. I no longer give keys to the city unless I know who they are, the kind of equipment they have invested in, etc. It's not fair to me or others.

I'm getting tons of call from people who want to get into the PW industry. Most want "free training " or are willing to donate a couple days labor. Anybody who calls me knows I love to help others. I also get probably 2-3 calls per week from Softwashsytems since I am a member of the Pro-staff.

Lately I've been getting more and more calls from people who want training who are located in/near to my market area. These folks could eve eventually become direct competition . Not sure how I feel about that.

Any thoughs?

The only calls I have gotten are from guys right here in NH and I have helped them all. Competition is competition and I have dealt with it in Building and Remodeling for 26 years. I honestly don't sweat competition and that isn't because I'm ****y it is because if you are professional over the phone and look professional and act it, people will hire you over your competition even if you are higher on price. This means not only having professional web site but matching vehicles and uniforms and nice business cards. Always dress neat and shave andddon't smell like cigarettes or booze and never swear. But on one last note I would never ever do this to anyone of the friends of associates here NSWA, I would never share anything that would hurt any of the guys that helped train me and I mean that...( but I would train someone for free if he was Pat s neighbor)..

People that offer free labor do not understand the knowledge they are gaining just by viewing your operation and your set up. If someone new is working with you they are mostly in the way or have to be told every move to make. new people must be taught, explained too, supervised, trained. It's stressful and very time consuming.

There is no way that should be free!. I was thinking I need to spend a week with you just to watch what you have figured out that works. Water booster pump for example. And I do what you do just with different equipment.

Supervising and training should have a price!

Guys.. Please do not offer any advise... Lets keep what we do on the down low.. PLEASE! Im telling you we have a good thing. Back in the day to gross $1500 in a day took a bucket truck, a chipper truck, a chipper, a stump grinder, a chit load of ropes & gear & 4 men..... now im doing it with 1 guy & 1 truck.. PLEASE! Keep it to our selves....

Send them all to Roof Shampoo for instruction like John said. They can all learn how to use the surface cleaner on the roof

Feeling a little bit like those guys making the call. I am a bit special I suppose as I am in no way competition to your market. I have come here to gather as much info and assistance as I can get. believe me I appreciate it and intend to grow a great business and hopefully an industry on it here in Aus.

There is a fine line between being helpful and selling your intellectual integrity for nothing. Take KFC for instants. 13 Special secret herbs and spices. They never gave that info up and try as they might no other chicken franchise got near them.

If you put a price on that integrity like $100.00 you'll scare off the tire kickers and sort the hay from the chaff.

Its probably the only way to see whose fair dinkum.

Like many on the forum, I have been helped a lot--- by many of you seasoned experts and we are grateful for the direction. I also invested money in training with Doug Rucker, so I have mixed feelings about sitting down and handing the whole business to a person on the phone.

There is a lot of investment capital that has to go with the dream of being a business owner of any new endeavor.

This is still one of the least expensive businesses we have ever started, but the tab grows daily as does the receipts.

I guess this is why AC, uglies, powerwashstore,etc have elected to be vendors and trainers. I am going to direct new traffic to them.

We will always help forum guys who are investing in education and equipment etc to do this business right. I want to give back for all the help!

With all the steep complex roofs I've safely cleaned from the ladder, one would have to be crazy to lug a shampooer on the roof!
