vinyl siding discolored

Brian,

If you didn't do the job yet tell the customer about it. Your cleaning might help it blend in. We did a house the other day where there was two different batches of tan vinyl siding used and I had to be the bearer of bad news that I could never get them to match.

I have a house down the street from me (that use to be owned by my uncle) that the vinyl siding was a med. brown fading. the new HO's thought it was GM and had some hacker PW it. It came out worse. turns out the base color of the vinyl was black. it looked so much worse so they had to repaint the whole house.

besides the paint breaking down from UV rays, despite what treehuggers say, Vinyl and some other plastics break down from UV rays to a powdery form which is why before we repaint vinyl siding it is necc. to POWERWASH and not just softwash. you need to get the loose substrate off and have a solid foundation to apply new paint. however the prob. with PW vinyl siding is you can if not done correctly force water under the siding and once trapped can cause rot and "fungus". I've stripped off siding only to find mushroom "farms"behind them.

sounds like the base color of the vinyl was not as close to the finish coat and too much wear thru the paint is why it is discolored.

I smell an upsell! (repaint)

The house is 10 yrs old. To find out the brother in-law tried cleaning it a few weeks ago and the blotchiness was the result. Told customer there was nothing I could do to get siding to return to its original finish.

Brian- which not do some paid testing with some different products? And if that doesn't work replace a few pieces of siding. Or sometimes what I do is take some good siding from a hidden part of the house and swap it with the damaged stuff.

Then wash the whole house

Oxidized siding is a pain,..especially the darker colors and huge sides on a house,.The ONLY positive thing is,...given time, the oxidation will blend itself back together. Gotta watch getting your gutter cleaner on oxidized siding.
