Here are some pics of a slate roof we worked on yesterday. Very very heavy Lichen, HO let this one go way too long but! being the 1st roof cleaning company in this area there was no one to clean it before now. Thats thick looking lichen
will it not scrape of with a floor scraper or garden hoe ,at an extra cost plus a re application of mix cost

You don't want to scrap it or pick it, soft wash it and charge right the first time. We try not to mess with the slate as sometimes they are brittle from the years of weather.

yeah can see that now its not as easy as moss to leave the surface best to let nature fix what nature caused .would an infestation as bad as that not require a double amount of mix just to penetrate the lichen

2 coats of a slate mix and it will take 6 months to a yr to come off. Soft washing the right way!

I sprayed it heavy with a 60/40 mix water/sh and kept spraying just keeping it wet for at least 30 minutes. I wanted to make sure everything was penetrated so I knew it was all dead.

Thanks Ray. Ya that chit was pretty thick. He only wanted the north side of the roof done. We used 70 gallons of mix on slate roof, shingle half garage and gazzabo with cedar shingles. Customer is happy. Everything is brown now, cedar shingles lightened just enough from dark brown to natural. I left the mix on the cedar for about 10-15 minutes. I will go back in a few months and take more pics.

We cleaned a glazed slate roof recently. We used a 50/50 mix since the house had gutters and sprayed three light coats. That kept it wet long enough to cook without much run-off. We then rinsed it and the moss and licken washed off quite easily.

Thanks Ted.....Dave, I had a lot of run off but there were just pea stone under the eaves. The lichen was very thick and had to saturate it. It still seemed like I didnt quite use enough. A lot of the thinner lichen came right off with a light rinse but the thicker stuff is on there for a while.

You might want to brush up on what happens to slate when it hits a certain age...Like 40 yrs on up. When that moss and Lichen comes off you might receive a phone call from the cutomer with some questions. Being up to date will help.

I've read that you don't use soap in the mix. Is there some surfactant that is appropriate for slate?
I have a window customer I drive by almost daily and their slate roof needs help. I've not said anything to them yet.

I love the cast iron vent made of scrap pieces. The upside down connection is a dead give away. Though this roof probably belongs to a house that I couldnt afford, it doesnt stop me from critique.
