Making Up Your Own HP hoses
Permalink

I've always had the reusable hose repair kits on board but never needed them,..until one day I did. I put on the reusable end and finished the job,...and was gonna go have the hose fixed with the crimped on end,..but decided against it,...I made up another hose though to take along in case the reusable end started leaking,..it never did.  I have three jump hoses,..each with reusable ends,...used them all last season,..and only had one very minor drip,..was an easy fix,..just recut it and put the end back on.

I change my HP hose every year,...so I always have a good supply of donor hose for making hose when and if needed.

Point is,..these things in my experience are better than just a temporary fix,.. Other vendors also sell them.

What do you use in the field to get a clean cut?

Hey Brett,...I have the air compressor on board for the AODD, and I use an air cut-off wheel.

I only ever had to fix one hose in the field,..it was the jumper hose from my PW pump to the unloader block,...It was long enough that all I had to do was cut it past the burst,..and attach the reusable end,..and I was back up and running.

They can also be used to fix a burst in the middle of a hose,..just have to use two of the "ends" and put them together with a swivel,..or even quick couplers,..I have yet to do that. I replace my main hose every year now.

Luckily,..I have very few hose issues,..I originally bought these for the repair aspect,..but now I like being able to rely on them to make my own hoses.

Attaching these is nicer at home though,..with a vice.

Since we don't have air compressors on the trucks the only thing I can think of is keeping hack saws on the trucks. One more tool for them to rust and n ot take care of!

Hey Brett,..yea I hear ya',....I actually use them to make hoses rather than field repair. I mean,..I have them if necessary,..but I try to keep relatively fresh hoses,..but,..anything can happen. Running low PSI 90% of the time helps with hose life greatly I believe.

If you were interested in keeping them in the trucks,..Buy the cheap electric angle grinder from Harbor Freight. They're like $20,..and would work good enough.   There's usually an outlet somewhere to be had.

Yea,.I know a couple guys with those cheap grinders,..they just use them sparingly and seem to work fine. Just grab a pack of cut-off wheels and it should be fine. Maybe you'll get lucky and never have to use it in the field,..Ha, Ha. Kinda' like a spare tire,..never want to have to use it.

Harbor Freight is one of those places where some stuff is fine when you factor in the use,..and some of the stuff is junk. I buy my nitrile gloves there,..and the Pittsburgh hand tools are a bargain,..I've used,.. and still have sockets, wrenches etc.. since the 80's

I never had good luck using the hack saw or sawzall so I use a grinder with a cutoff wheel, works good each time, been using those reusable hose ends for over 14 years now as needed and they never fail.

Thanks Cris! I'm adding this to the trucks for next season.
