Algae Inhibitor for Vermont Slate Roofing Tiles

A home owner that has a Vermont slate roof would like me to clean the algae off it. He is also asking if there is any type of inhibitor that we can spray on it. I believe there are some zinc and copper solutions. However does anyone know if they truly work? If so, could they leave any stains or oxidation on the slate? Your suggestions are welcomed.

I consulted with the Vermont Slate company and the individual I spoke too could not recommend any type of inhibitor...just routine cleaning.

Years ago we discussed adding copper sulfate to a sealer and apply it to the roof,..whether it be slate, asphalt shingles,,..etc,.. The sealer would act as a time release for the copper sulfate. No ratios or such were ever discussed,..but I think it does have merit if worked through.

I agree though,..just clean it!

At this time I'm going to propose to the HO to just clean the roof without any potential inhibitor. His slate roof is too large to experiment with.

Dave O why not offer the home owner a maintenance cleaning contract at a greatly reduced price. You could pencil it in for every couple of years or at the first signs of moss, lichen or discolouration of the roof. At the end of the day there is no way to prevent any of these funguses returning.
